La Coulette SA Composting, in Belmont-sur-Lausanne, has been reducing environmental impact locally and replenishing the soil for over 30 years.
"We don't inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."
Wendell Berry, The Unforeseen Wilderness
La Coulette has been a specialist in recycling organic waste since 1994 - chipping and shredding wood, stump grinding, and compost spreading - making it a valuable asset to the more than 25 communes and around 100 businesses it serves in the Lavaux-Oron district of eastern Lausanne.
A family with a long-held commitment to the environment
Passionate about the land, family, community and ecological and humanist values, Philippe and Marc-Etienne Favre were aware of the need to empower individuals to create a harmonious relationship between man and nature. In 1989, they took the first steps towards setting up a regional composting facility on their 47-hectare farm in the hills above the commune of Belmont.
Five years later, on April 18, 1994, La Coulette Composting came into being, launching its business with the aim of processing 6,000 tonnes of material per year. Today, the company is still run by the Favre family. Gisela and her sons Simon and Gilles, who continue to uphold the family values, have been at the helm since 2021, processing over 1,500 tonnes of waste per month. To meet their goal, the dynamic team rely on age-old skills, six dedicated employees with a passion for the work, and a range of specialised equipment that is unique in French-speaking Switzerland.
Organic waste
Led by a doctor of agronomy and applied ecology, La Coulette markets its natural fertilisers to a wide range of private and business customers, including winegrowers, landscapers, farmers, manufacturers of potting compost, market gardeners and local authorities (for municipal green spaces). These products are the precursors of sustainable fertilisers, based on organic soil improvers. They are similar to natural earth, rich in fertilisers and less likely to be washed away as they are strongly bound to the clay-humus complex, enriched with clay, and they enable the soil to regain its original properties that might have been partially or totally lost through modern production methods. The organic soil improver brands protected in Switzerland are HUMAFORM and AGRIFORM. To guarantee the quality of its products, the company is inspected annually by the industry inspectorate.
